8th February 1878 – Nessebar’s liberation during the Russo-Turkish war of Liberation

The local population disarmed the Turkish garrison and took away three of their cannons. The local occupied position behind the ancient fortified walls, drove back the enemy attacks and sheltered many refugees. They gave a warm welcome to the Russian liberators.

1st May – Spring municipal gathering

It has a long history which started 80 years ago. World War I deprived Bulgaria of some of her territory. It lost a large part of Macedonia which was handed back to Serbia and Greece. A massive wave of Bulgarian refugees expelled from those regions made its way to Bulgaria. Soon they became an integral part of the Bulgarian society and played an important role in its political and cultural life.

The spring municipal gathering is organized every year to commemorate the event on the site where the refugees have camped and spent the night before entering the town of Nessebar.

24th June – Festive day of the town of Obzor

A legend has it that the Black Sea has taken many victims. On that day an offering is made to make the sea merciful, so bathing is safe.

20th July – Festive day of the village of Banya

This is the day of the East Orthodox Saint Elias the Prophet. He is the patron saint of the village. The village church is one of the oldest in the area. It was built in 1887 and it bears the saint’s name.

22nd August – Festive day of bread

Residents and visitors to the town gather around a specially laid table with home bread seasoned with ground dried herbs and wine in Messambria square in Old Nessebar.

26th August – Festive day of the village of Ravda

The church is named after St. Paraskeva who is the patron saint of the village.

15th August – Celebration day of Nessebar


15th August is a main religious holiday. On that date the East Orthodox church celebrates the religious festivity of the Mother of God,” The Assumption of Our Lady”.

The day starts with a mass in the church of the Assumption and it continues with celebrations till late at night. Many people take part in the festivity and the day goes by in high spirits.

14th October – St. Petka’s day, a festive day of the village of Orizare

1st November – Festive day of the village of Kosharitsa

This is the day of Bulgarian National Revival leaders and the religious holiday of St. John of Rila, the guardian saint of Bulgarian people.

8th November - the Day of the Archangels

It is the festive day of the village of Tankovo
